The Van Allen Belt
The Van Allen Belt
The Van Allen Belt lean toward psychedelia, coast on electronica, and mention an eclectic array of music, film, and theater influences in songs that can be described as intensely skewed and modernized oldies.

The current arrangement of the group consists of four members currently residing in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Songwriter, producer, musician, and film collaborator B.K. Ferris is native to Canton, OH. His work is defined by his acquired style of production, taking influences from the integration of sound recordings with films. The concept for The Van Allen Belt, he says, was originally inspired by filmmaker Guy Maddin, and was also influenced by the tape loop collage group White Noise. He plays keys in live performances. Tamar Kamin was influenced from a young age by Pittsburgh's historic Jazz gateway and contributes her unique and publically heralded style to the project as a vocalist. Tom Altes is an experienced bass guitar virtuoso who has worked on a resume-worthy catalog of projects across the globe. The project is tied together by sound designer/engineer/filmmaker, Scott Taylor, who performs the role of mixing live on stage with the group and controlling the video projections.

The group debuted in 2007 with a self-released recording called "Meal Ticket To Purgatory", leading the group to tour with the UK's experimental pop group Stereolab and Bradford Cox's solo project Atlas Sound. They self-released their sophomore LP "Superpowerfragilis: Or How I Learned To Stop Caring And Love The Drug" simultaneously with an extended EP, "Vancouver And All The Reasons Why" in 2010 under their homemade label Nonstop Everything Records. During this time the group also delved into video and created 2 original projects in support of their release, which eventually led their live performance to an audio/visual display including originals from the group, and works contributed by the collaborative painter and digital artist Peter Luckner. They are currently touring within the US and expect to release their next album early in 2013.
