Musical Art Quintet
The Musical Art Quintet was formed in 2008 in the Mission district of San Francisco during chamber music jam sessions every Sunday night at Cafe Revolution. Each week a new piece of music was written by MAQ band leader Sascha Jacobsen to be performed at Classical Revolution, and ink still wet, we would read through the piece in front of a live audience. As our repertoire grew, a core group of players emerged and the quintet was founded.
The name of the quintet is taken from The Musical Art Quartet, a string quartet formed in the 1940's and led by the Great-Grandfather and namesake of the bassist and composer of the quintet, violinist, Sascha Jacobsen.
Although classically trained, the members of The Musical Art Quintet are skilled improvisors and each one brings with him a special area of expertise. Whether it is Argentine Tango, Afro-Cuban Son, Klezmer, Classical works, or even Electronica, the Quintet is at home. The music of band leader, Sascha Jacobsen, is essentially rhythmic in nature, utilizing dance forms to propel his melodies forward. Each piece is based on a dance form, but instead of a Sarabande or a Gigue, Jacobsen uses rhythms like Cha Cha Cha or Milonga.
Nuevo Chamber is our name for this new genre that blends world music influences with a chamber music ensemble, infusing rhythms from Argentina, Cuba, Africa, Jazz, Classical and even Electronica into our own style of music. The Quintet has cemented it's status as a top world music string ensemble with recent recordings with the Nuevo Flamenco guitarist, Stevan Pasero (Twelve Shades of Night, 2010, Sugo records) and with the Argentine Tango group, Trio Garufa (El Rumor de tus Tangos, 2010, Garufa records).

Vytal Theory
Vytal Theory is an inspired answer to traditional conceptions of musical collaboration. Comprised of DJ (who mixes music as well as video) and an Electro-Acoustic Violinist (performing on a custom six string violin), the group brings a diverse array of music backgrounds and influences to the stage. What results is a new sound that both celebrates tradition and challenges present boundaries, for...ever moving forward.
DJ/Producer Elan Vytal began his musical career in Oakland, CA in 1995 with the politically charged hip-hop group, Rizing Sun Productions. In 2002 he attended the School of Audio Engineering in New York and began spinning at clubs and high-end social events, including exclusive parties for celebrities ranging from P Piddy to Ashton Kutcher. Elan Vytal has performed at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, Brooklyn Museum and for Jazz at Lincoln Center (Rose Theater). He has been hailed by the LA Times for his sound installations at the Studio Museum of Harlem (Pro Dreams). With Elan's versatility, you will find him at a variety of venues performing alongside great musicians, always expanding the definition of today's DJ.
Praised by the New York Times for his “outrageous fiddling,” Matthew Szemela (aka String Theory) is a violinist who crosses musical genres with ease. He received both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Mannes College of Music. Matthew has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Recital Hall, and various venues throughout Europe, Russia and Australia. In 2006 Matthew served as concertmaster of the Hustla Symphony Orchestra for Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt 10th Anniversary Concert at Radio City Music Hall (NYC). He has also had the pleasure of collaborating with the likes of Savion Glover, Vernon Reid, Cassandra Wilson, and ?uestlove. A musician's musician, Matthew always tells the story with his unique musical dialect.
